Introduction

Changes in the roundel of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) certainly affected their Organisational (or what I now call Service) Flag. The former (and current) RSAF Service Flags are now displayed in the RSAF Museum and the image can be viewed at their website. The roundel was a tricolour 1968-1973, a ying-yang 1973-1990 and the current lion-head since 1990. [Image archived here.]

Air Force Ensign

Organisational Flag

I recently went to Singapore (...) where I obtained a booklet which had on one page all the flags of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). The Air Force Flag has a red canton of crescent and stars but the background is air force blue with the current logo of the lion's head.

The flag described by Tom Koh is the organisational flag of the Air Force. It is displayed at the Air Force camps.

The lion head roundel appears on the Air Force Ensign. Officially it is red, but as such is rarely seen (http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/3900/s211-2.jpg). More frequently seen is the black low visibility version as in http://www.challoner.com/aviation/pix/104-71.jpg and another rare version is the white low visibility version seen at http://www.airshowaction.com/nlls2000/nlls2000_42.jpg.

State Colour

This flag is the State Colour of the Air Force, which is only displayed at Ceremonial Events such as on National Day Parade held on 9th August, on visits by Heads of Governments or States or at the President's inspection. It is based on the National Flag with the Air Force badge on the lower fly.

The Yin-Yang (1973-1990) - "[This is] the roundel used since the early 1970s to 1990. In the late 1980s this roundel was toned down for "lo-visibility" purposes, in line with most air forces at that time, with the red replaced by black and white replaced by clear. This roundel was discarded in 1990 in favour of the current Lion head roundel.

Fachinger 1974 mentions an old Singapore air force ensign using a red-white-red roundel in the fly. I believe there was another type of roundel between this and the current one, but I am not sure if this was used on the air force ensign as well.

The Tri-Colour (1968-1973) - The tri-colored insignia initially applied to the Singapore Air Defence Command/Republic of Singapore Air Force's aircraft. This insignia, similar to Peru and Turkey, was discarded in 1973.
